Contouring techniques are employed to balance the face shape and to enhance features. Contouring and highlighting is essential for any type of photographic make-up particularly black and white photography.

• Thin the nose
• Shade the face
• Emphasise cheekbones
• Highlight brow bones
• Hide a double chin
• Make lips look more pronounced
• Improve cleavage
• Make the collar bones more pronounced
• Achieve the “burn” made famous by celebrity make-up artist Sam Fine, a contouring technique for darker skin tones
